U mladosti je obolio od amiotrofične lateralne skleroze (ALS), paralizirajuće bolesti koja uzrokuje slabljenje tjelesnih mišića. Potpuno nepokretan, izgubio je i sposobnost govora, pa je komunicirao jedino uz pomoć računalnog sintetizatora glasa
